Welcome to the Department of Horticulture and Crop Production at the School of Agriculture and Technology. The Department is one of the pioneer three Departments established in 2014/2015 at the inception of the New School of Agriculture and Technology at the Dormaa-Ahenkro Campus of the University of Energy and Natural Resources, Sunyani, Ghana.
The Department offers a 4-year degree, both regular and weekend (top-up) programme leading to the award of Bachelor of Science in Agriculture (Horticulture) and Bachelor of Science in Agriculture (Crop Production). It also runs postgraduate programs in Crop Sciences with options in Agronomy, Postharvest Technology, Plant Pathology and Entomology, and Climate-Smart and Sustainable Agriculture. The Department is using a very strong partnership approach to prepare future leaders who would provide solutions to horticulture and crop production problems in Ghana and beyond, ensure food security and actively engage in crop farming as a business.
The Department provides a conceptual basis for understanding sound scientific practices in sustainably improving crop productivity. As such, students are provided with the opportunity to critically reflect upon their own direct experience of crop production activities in terms of concepts and research presented during lectures. Also, with the target of providing hands-on agriculture training, students are offered on-the-job practical field training of sustainable farming practices in addition to a full-fledge one semester Industrial Attachment Training in their 3rd year of study. The Department conducts demand-driven research and disseminate and transfer appropriate technologies to farmers, companies/industries and other relevant policy-making stakeholders.
