The Animal Production and Heath department is a unique animal science department in Ghana that combines both animal production and health. It is one of the three premier departments in the School of Agriculture and Technology of the University of Energy and Natural Resources. The department is situated at Dormaa Ahenkro, the leading poultry production hub in Ghana. The agro-ecological climate of the area is conducive for both the study and production of farm animals. The department offers outstanding opportunities for study at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, resulting in degrees that leave our students in an excellent position to choose their future. Students have excellent opportunities to study under faculty with expertise in Animal Breeding and Genetics, Animal Nutrition and Feed Science, Animal Biotechnology, Animal Health and Meat Science Technology.
Our programmes are made up of teaching and practical components where students are actively involved in farm and laboratory practicals. There is a rich component of farm and industrial attachment at the undergraduate level where students are offered the opportunity to be attached to functional commercial farms in Ghana, Cote-d’Ivour and other neighbouring countries.
The department is in active collaborative research and partnership with private farms within its enclave and beyond. In the coming years, the department envisages making significant progress in research involving areas such as sustainable indigenous livestock production and its interactions with climate change issues.
